Why Truck Driving? USA Truck Driver Tells All

Thursday, February 9, 2012 by Derek McClain

Tired of living the same day over and over?

You know what we mean - wake up, get ready for work, drive the same route each day, do the same job (such as operating a  forklift) over and over with seemingly no signs of progress or change.

Steven was in a similar spot before he decided to go after a truck driver job.  In fact, Steven went to another truck driving school prior to finding Driver Solutions.  He soon found out that a school with credit checks and loans was not the best option for him.  Driver Solutions, on the other hand, was able to find a company to sponsor his training (USA Truck) which meant no upfront tuition money and no credit checks.

Not only was the ability to travel the country appealing to Steven, he also wanted to provide a better living for his family.  With a wife and 2 kids there were some upcoming expenses (such as dance school) he was going to have to take on and the first year potential salary that comes along with a truck driver job was encouraging.

We were able to catch up with Steven while he was waiting on this USA Truck Driver Trainer to pick him up.  Watch the video above for more from Steven!

What Are The Instructors Really Like Truck Driving School?

Wednesday, February 1, 2012 by Derek McClain
Thinking about truck driving school

Wondering what it's really like to go from an inexperienced driver to a confident CDL holder in 3-4 weeks?

How about the instructors, what's it like to work with them?

Check out the video below as real truck driving school students talk about the learning experience that is CDL training.  In this video, students will discuss training in general as well as their experience with the truck driving school instructors.

On the surface, driving a semi tractor trailer may seem pretty easy, but once you learn all of the information covered in the classroom, on the range and out on the road you'll gain a whole new resepect for what it takes to become a professional truck driver.

Truck driving school is a fast paced, fun learning experience that will give you the skills needed to find a truck driver job and open doors to a career in the transportation industry.  Remember, the instructors are there for a reason and it's to help you be successful.

PAM Transport Driver Visits Indianapolis Trucking School

Tuesday, January 17, 2012 by Derek McClain
PAM Transport Driver - NicoleNicole Reeves first applied with Driver Solutions about 1 year ago today.  She had always wanted to become a truck driver and when some things finally fell into place in her life she realized it was time to pursue this lifelong dream.  She attended truck driving school in Indianapolis and went to work for PAM Transport

Fast forward to a year later and we're happy to report that Nicole Reeves is loving life on the road with PAM Transport!  Just yesterday, she stopped by one of the truck driving schools Driver Solutions works with in Indianapolis, Indiana to visit for awhile.  During that visit she took the time to do a video interview (full video will be posted later this week) to share more about her story as well as tips for new truck drivers.

Let's Get to Know Nicole
:

Living Her Dream
Ever since she first got her driver's license, Nicole PAM Transport Driverhas had a CB radio in her car just to listen in on the conversation.  When trucks would pass out on the highway, she'd think about how she'd like to become a truck driver one day.  She's now visited all but 5 of the lower 48 states and is very proud to say, "I love my job!"

Getting Started
While she had not previously held a CDL, Nicole had some experience driving trucks and hauling things from other jobs which made areas of truck driver training such as backing up a bit easier for her.  She really enjoyed her time at trucking school, stays in contact with some classmates and stops by for a visit when her schedule allows.

Positive Attitude & Communication
Nicole has a positive relationship with her dispatcher which helps make communication between the two much easier.  She recommends asking for home time as far in advance as possible and always asking to be home a day earlier than needed to plan for any schedule changes that may come up.  She says that having a positive attitude as a truck driver is key.

Budgeting for Meals on the Road
Nicole typically visits Wal-Mart to get her groceries and has a budget of roughly $50-$60 per week for food.  She recommends having quick, healthy snacks available and avoiding highly-caffeinated drinks as much as possible.

What About the Miles and Pay?
She is really enjoying her time with PAM Transport and averages around 2,500 - 2,700 miles per week, though she just wrapped up a 3,900 mile run to California.  She's happy with the money she's making as a truck driver as it's allowed her to provide for her family.  She plans on staying with PAM Transport for several years beyond her 1 year anniversary with the company

Helpful Hint
She also mentions that velcro is a truck driver's best friend.  She uses velcro on her CB radio as well as many other items around the truck.

Be sure to check back later this week for more from Nicole!

2 Must Reads for New Truck Drivers

Wednesday, January 4, 2012 by Derek McClain
If you're looking to find a truck driving job with no experience, you need to fully prepare yourself for that first year behind the wheel of a big rig.  You see, getting the first year of experience is the key, but it can also be one of the biggest challenges you'll face.  Why?  Because the first year requires you to make some lifestyle changes that come along with being away from home for a few weeks at a time.

Check out these must-read blog posts from Driver Solutions to help you make the adjustment and get the most out of that first year:

3 Reasons Your First Year As A Truck Driver Will Make or Break You
Getting started in trucking can be a daunting task. Some people are lucky enough to know truck drivers or retired truckers. They can ask questions, seek guidance, and know what to expect as they take the journey into the longest road trip of their life... Trucking.
Unfortunately, not everyone is that lucky. Many people have nowhere to go for answers except the Internet. Three years ago, I was that person. I had all sorts of questions:

How do I get started?
How often will I get to come home?
How much money will I make?
What company should I start with?

As we’re ending 2011 and heading into 2012, we look back on the past year, think about the goods and others, and start planning the New Year.  The first year of trucking is definitely the toughest, so the best approach is to set your goals for a successful first year.  For goals to actually work for you, you have to be specific, make sure they are achievable, and they need to be measurable.

To say that in the first year my goal is “To become a good truck driver” is not a specific goal.  You can’t measure it, and you have no real way of knowing if you’ve achieved it.  That said, you have to break down what it means to become a good truck driver and here are 3 measurable goals that will help you do just that..

Find a Truck Driving Job: Is 2012 Going to Be Your Year?

Tuesday, December 20, 2011 by Derek McClain
Every day starts off just about the same way.  You wake up, read the paper while drinking your coffee and look for a new job that's better than the one you're in now...

Does that sound like your 2011?

You see, maybe it's not so much that your job is really THAT bad as it is that the only thing you see ahead of you is a dead end and a life of living paycheck to paycheck.

After awhile, you begin to realize that no matter where you look you're just seeing the same types of jobs over and over.  Then you begin to remember some things that ran through your head when you were growing up...

You remember what it felt like to sit on your grandpa's lap in his HUGE semi truck and pretend like YOU were driving by turning the wheel from side to side.  You remember that feeling you got standing next to your dad's big rig when he was showing you what that big diesel engine looked like under the hood.

Finally, you begin to realize that maybe it's time to make a change and go after something you've always thought about...maybe it's time to become a truck driver.

You are not alone...

Over the last 23 years, Driver PAM Transport TruckSolutions has helped over 20,000 people realize their dreams of becoming a truck driver.

And many of these drivers had no experience prior to starting CDL training.  None at all.  In just over 3 weeks, they were able to obtain a CDL license and start a new career as a professional truck driver.

Why?
Because these individuals were able to work with trucking companies that pay for CDL training.

Matt's Truck Driver Training Story

Let's take Matt for example.  He was literally shaking after he climbed down from behind the wheel of an 18-wheeler for the first time during truck driver training.  He was nervous.  He was overwhelmed.  But he wanted more.

You see, he knew right away the things he'd done correctly and the things he needed to work on.  All it took was that feeling that comes with operating a vehicle that large to ignite his fire to learn more.  While he was a bit frustrated on some of the things he'd missed, he couldn't wait to get back up there to try again.  You could literally see the thoughts running through his head as he began reciting how he should have shifted during some of the turns.

Through the next 2 weeks, Matt was able to develop his skills and become a confident driver.  Truck driver training enabled him to pass the CDL test, obtain a CDL license and ultimately start a new career.

So, what is the point here?

The point is that Matt had a goal and didn't give up when times got tough.  After being layed off from the USPS, he knew it was his time to make a change.  Suddenly that career he'd always thought about became a reality because the timing was right.

Things weren't always easy for Matt.  Whether it was spending hours by himself memorizing the pre-trip inspection or putting in the extra effot on the range, but he got it done.

A new career wasn't handed to Matt, he made it himself with the help of classmates and instructors.

How Did Company Sponsored CDL Training Help?

With a program such as company sponsored CDL training, this opportunity exists for any qualified individuals who are ready to make change.  One of the great things about truck driving is that age doesn't really matter much.  As long as you're over 22, you qualify for company sponsored CDL training programs.  Many people, like Matt, become truck drivers in their 2nd, 3rd or even 4th career.

If you've thought about becoming a truck driver and find yourself in a similar situation to Matt, you might ask yourself if 2012 is going to be your year?

The 9 Best Gifts for Truck Drivers

Monday, November 28, 2011 by Alonna Koch

We recently asked our Driver Solutions Facebook fans to help us come up with a list of the best gift ideas for truck drivers, and we were overwhelmed with responses.

While some traditional Christmas gifts are great, we put together a list of truck driver gift ideas that come straight from the truck drivers themselves. This year make sure you give a truck driver something they really want and need that will help make life on the road easier and more comfortable.

Now, we all know that gift buying is easier said than done. In today's busy world, we are overwhelmed with options - so how do you go about deciding what's best for someone working a trucking job?

Well, the good news is that shopping for a truck driver doesn’t have to be difficult. With the advice of actual truck drivers, their friends and family members, Driver Solutions has put together a long list of both essential needs and nice luxuries that the truck driver in your life may want!

Here’s our list of what we think are the 9 best gift ideas for truck drivers:

  1. Canned GoodCanned goods- A great stocking stuffer!  The professional driver has to be prepared at all times for bad weather, long holdovers, and just general emergencies. Having a nice stock of canned goods will help them be prepared.
  2. Roadpro Skillet- A cooking tool like the Roadpro frying pan is good for cooking eggs and warming up different items. As a compact item designed to be used by travellers, its perfect for truck drivers.
  3. SiriusXM Satellite radio- Satellite radio subscriptions are great for truck drivers that are on the road for hours on end. They can program their favorite channels and always have something to keep them entertained.
  4. Laptop or iPad- Laptops, and now the iPad, are consistently one of the most wanted gifts by truck drivers. These tools provide the opportunity to log onto the internet, watch movies, listen to music, play games, and endless other things. Though laptops and the iPad can cost several hundred dollars, look for holiday deals to get a better price.
  5. Power inverter- Power inverters provide household-like power while on the go. Drivers can hook up their cell phone charger, camera, DVD players, or whatever they like to get constant energy. Make sure that when you are choosing a power inverter that you select one that is compatible with the a truck.
  6. Bluetooth- With the new U.S. Department of Transportion ruling that commercial drivers cannot use hand-help cell phones, investing in a good bluetooth device would be a great idea for a driver that likes to communicate with friends and family members.
  7. Cobra GPS- While there are plenty of great GPS devices available, the fans on our Facebook page frequently recommend a Cobra GPS. A GPS can be a great navigational tool to help truckers get to their destination in the least amount of time flip camerapossible, which we all know is important!  This GPS even has truck specific routes to help with things such as overhead clearence.
  8. Flip camera- Flip cameras are compact, easy-to-use camcorders that allow even a novice to create fun videos. With all of the different places truck drivers visit, a video camera would be a great gift to help them record their travels or send videos to loved ones.
  9. Warm winter jacket, coveralls, hats, gloves, and other warm winter-wear- Even if you live in a generally warm area, first year truck drivers are normally over-the-road and will travel through many bitterly cold regions. Having a warm winter jacket, a hat, comfortable driving gloves, and even coveralls will help make time on the cold road more bearable.

Other great gift ideas include a heated blanket, griddle, crock pot, George Forman grill, mini fridge, microwave, a VHF radio, tools, a flashlight, or even something as simple as Pepto Bismol to help aid truck stop heartburn.

Still not sure what to get a truck driver? When in doubt, most people enjoy handmade gifts like a home-cooked meal or a knitted blanket. If your trucker already has everything they want or need, consider getting them a gift card, which could be used on clothes, food, or whatever they like.

The most important thing to remember is that gifts for truck drivers do not need to be pricey or expensive, but rather should be thoughtful and from the heart.

The Lifeblood of America

Saturday, October 22, 2011 by Truck Driver Appreciation
The human body is amazing. The circulatory system as its crowning glory. A system of pathways, crowded with so many components and somehow it finds its way to the appropriate place to get its respective work done. Cells are the workhorse of that system. They carry nutrients, medicine, enzymes and other critical components so the body can remain healthy, or help repair itself.

We have a nearly perfect representation of that in the world of professional semi truck driving. Truck drivers are the cells that attach to components that need transport to certain areas of the country. We run through the vessels (roads) of a large circulatory system (America's interstates and towns) and keep a body (the nation) supplied with food and other goods to keep us running. If this country ever shut down its trucking industry there would be massive complications. That is why truck drivers need to be appreciated.

Truck drivers actually do 8 jobs in one:

  • The first is that they overcome the fear of losing control of an 80 thousand pound vehicle every day.
  • The second is that they have to be a watchful participant on the road to make sure that they do not negatively impact the lives of others through their mistakes and others neglect.
  • Thirdly, they are mini-mechanics. They make sure a truck and the trailer are up to "snuff" for safety so there are no mistakes down the road.
  • Fourthly, they are accountants. They have to calculate and weigh and record numbers and times and places in order to make sure they comply with government regulations.
  • Fifth, they are protectors in a way. They interact with other semi truck drivers to make sure accidents are avoided by flashing lights, flashing to pass and other hand signals and CB radio communication.
  • Sixth, they are good samaritans, they stop to help motorists and other truckers in the cold and the heat and in other dangerous and diverse situations.
  • Seventh, they are the Ultimate laborer; they will drive for up to 11 hours a day for up to 7 days straight. It's a tedious, dangerous, tricky, cautious game that has to be played EVERY DAY and the skills must be in place to make sure that is done safely.
  • Finally, we are Highly Trained Technicians. In the middle of an any type of weather storm, we have to gauge times, distances, ratio's, parameters, temperature, moisture levels, capacity of the van, stoppping power, equipment condition and a host of other factors.
I as a driver will stop my semi if I think something will have a negative impact. However, I know how to make the best time to the place my goods need to get to. I am appreciative of my driver manager and the planning department when they do a good job. It makes me perform well. My level of safety concern as I grow my skill set will keep me cautious, but efficient while I make PAM Transport a name that customers love with my clean appearance, friendly attitude towards my clients and the low risk I am to my employer. That is worth it

Utilizing My CDLs

Tuesday, October 18, 2011 by Truck Driver Appreciation
There are many others who perhaps are more deserving of this prize. But in these hard times any one who changes careers at 55 should receive something for their efforts. First I give my Lord, Jesus Christ, the credit for the ability to accomplish this task.

You see I had two jobs; driving a school bus and doing maintenance work for the church where my wife and I attended. The economy turned sour, people lost jobs, decreased income, as a result I need to leave the church, the major source of our income. Still left with a mortgage, credit card bills, as well as utilities; I needed to find a job that would span the gap of two incomes. Any job that I got would require me to stop driving a school bus, that is why I say one job for two. My wife and I thought about utilizing my CDL's.

Since I had a class B I thought it wouldn't be a problem to find a job, but the only thing is, it needed to bring in enough for two. In searching out the market I was told that Propane Truck Delivery Drivers earn around $17hr, so I study, get my background check done, finger printed again (already for the school bus job), take my test, and await the background check to clear. Everything comes together just right, but still I needed a job, every one told me to call around October, but this was July. My wife and I had discussed the over the road truck driving, but really didn't want to go there because I would be gone so much. Here we were facing this decision once again.

I got in contact with Driver Solutions and set things up to attend school at Littel Rock, AR, at C1 Truck Driving School. Now here we are almost three months later. I am employeed by PAM Transport, had my first three week out on my own, still working on getting everything co-ordinated. I am thankful that my wife has got a raise at the school where she works, that is helping to bridge the gap. We are going to make it with the Lord's help. We do have our house for sale for any one looking for a good deal on a 1612 sq. ft. home, built in 2006. Double car garage, brick 75%, landscaping, basically take over the payments. There are many others out there in my same shoes and I respect every one of them for their efforts.

Hi Richard,

Thank you for sharing your story about becoming a truck driver.  We know it's not always easy to switch careers at age 55.  That being said, we're glad you were able to get started and we wish you the best of luck in selling your house.

Doing What's Needed for Today & Tomorrow

Friday, October 14, 2011 by Truck Driver Appreciation
I used to live in Southwest Florida where I held a job in the pest control industry and gave kayak fishing trips for extra income. I had never taken into consideration that I would one day be without my money or fishing. When the BP oil spill happened my business went under. Oil in the Gulf scared almost everyone from going fishing, yet alone, in a kayak. I took it in stride and kept on. The next loss was the economy in SW Florida. The company I worked with for seven years started losing customers at an alarming rate which led to the layoffs. With three kids and a girlfriend, it was time to find a career choice that would provide regardless of changes in the world. I knew I needed a skill I could use anywhere in the country. I needed something that would allow me to give my family everything they needed and alot of the things they wanted. Well, truck driving was the answer I was looking for. I knew I'd be sacrificing my time with my family, time in paradise, and time fishing but there's no better reason than to give a family it's support.

6 Steps to Start a Trucking Career

Thursday, October 13, 2011 by Alonna Koch
Deciding to become a professional truck driver is one of the best career choices you can make today.  A career as a professional truck driver can open the door to many opportunities that can positively impact your life - including great pay and a stable environment.

You have probably found yourself asking, what exactly do you have to do to become a professional truck driver?PAM-Transport-Trucking-Career

First, you must meet the basic requirements of the US Department of Transportation and hold a Class A CDL license. The DOT requires you to pass a physical exam to make sure you are fit enough to handle the responsibilities of truck driving. The CDL ensures that truck drivers meet the minimum requirements for the safe operation of a tractor trailer. In addition to a standard general knowledge test, truck drivers must also obtain endorsements by passing the combination vehicle and air brake knowledge tests.  Potential truck drivers need to learn not only how to operate a truck, but they must also learn the rules and regulations that truck drivers must follow.

To get started, you should contact the best truck driver training school in the country and ask for career options based on your skills, background, and goals. Finding a program that can accommodate your needs is vital. A truck driving school should not only help you learn all of the information needed to get your CDL, but should also help you find truck driving jobs after graduation.

What do I do next?

Just like any career path, a trucking career is going to have its challenges.
