Ask Wayne: The Best Part of Driving Around the Country As A Trucker Is...

Thursday, February 7, 2013 by Wayne Cragg

Question
Leisha Leslie KKaboom from Driver Solutions Facebook page asks:  Whats the best part of driving around the country?

Answer

Hi Leisha,

Thank you for your question... I believe the best part of driving around the country is that you get to see the U.S.A. and all its beauty. Every state is different and every state is unique. For example, I had been to New York before, but never upper New York. My trainer Randy (he grew up in upper New York) and I went through upper New York with a load...

Tornadoes, Ice Storms & Snow Storms - Handling Bad Weather As a Newbie Trucker

Friday, February 1, 2013 by Wayne Cragg

Wow, I finally have some time to write a blog!  After the last few days, I'm still wondering if I should warn the states I'm getting ready to travel through that I'm coming!  It seems as though some violent, severe weather has been following me everywhere I go since I left home time in Missouri last week.

I probably shouldn't start with the craziest thing that has happened in my travels over the last 8 days, but I believe it was the most significant.  So, I'm going to go ahead and start with the...

"License & Logbook, Sir" – Wayne Gets Stopped By A State Trooper

Friday, January 25, 2013 by Wayne Cragg

I would like to take a minute on my blog to personally thank State Trooper, John Lamb! Why you may ask? Because in my very short 3 plus months I've been out OTR trucking with USA Truck, what do I get? A random, full blown DOT paperwork inspection of me, the truck and trailer, this past Saturday...AND I PASSED with no violations! Below I will go into a little more detail about how I was sweating bullets not really wanting anything bad on my record already. When State Trooper Lamb gave me back my...

A Story of Kindness - How A Fellow Trucker Helped Me Big Time

Friday, January 11, 2013 by Wayne Cragg

I wanted to tell you guys about an experience I had the other day...

I was delivering a load to a small town in the mountains of Pennsylvania and there was quite a bit of construction on my route. There were plenty of signs (poor signs, mind you, but signs nevertheless) about construction going on and my GPS was also telling me there was construction coming up. What the GPS and the signs failed to mention was that the major bridge that was supposed to get me to my destination was closed! I saw...

The Good and Bad of Truck Stops - From One Newbie to Another

Monday, January 7, 2013 by Wayne Cragg

I've been on the road now for about 3 1/2 months now (including training and solo) and I thought it would be nice to share a newbie's experience of truck stops - the good and the bad. Please don't take any of this for more than what it is - my very early experiences with truck stops. I am finding out every time I visit one that there is something they offer that I never knew they did.

Very early on with my USA Truck training I found truck stops to be very interesting places. Not for the reasons...

Winter Truck Driving: A Newbie Truck Driver's Experience

Wednesday, January 2, 2013 by Wayne Cragg

For someone in their first winter season driving a big rig, I have found snow and lots of it! I recently went to Maine to pick up a load and headed West to Minnesota. I ran into some snow in the mountains of New York and it snowed for almost 24 hours straight!  What I find different in driving the truck in winter weather in the mountains is the weight of course. Heading down a 5 or 6 percent grade with all that weight behind you means you need to make extra sure that you are in the right gear so...

My Truck Driving Career Goals for 2013 (and some personal ones too!)

Thursday, December 27, 2012 by Wayne Cragg

As 2013 bears down on all of us, I have been thinking about some goals for my new trucking career and also some personal goals I would like to accomplish next year.  The last 3 months have been filled with so much learning and traveling that I haven't had the time to think about such things until recently (with the short Christmas break). So, here we go!

Professionally, I would like to go the rest of the Winter with no incidents! Driving in the recent Winter conditions have been pretty tough and...

Wayne's Top Posts in 2012 - Starting A Career with USA Truck

Wednesday, December 26, 2012 by Derek McClain

Over the last 3 months, USA Truck driver Wayne Cragg has been sharing his journey into trucking with us.  It all began during his first day of OTR training with USA Truck. Since that time, we've all followed him as he's progressed to a confident first seat solo truck driver.  We wish we would have found Wayne when he first started truck driving school, but it didn't take us a long after seeing some of his great photography and Facebook posts to realize he was the perfect person to allow us to...
