Big 3 Automakers Beg for Bailout

Wednesday, December 3, 2008 by

Yesterday, in their second attempt at gaining government aid, the country’s Big 3 Automakers submitted a written plea for $34 billion to bail them out of a lagging economy.  But there’s one thing that concerns me…what happens if they don’t get the help they need now?  There are many people in the United States who depend on paychecks from GM, Ford, and Chrysler.  Where would those people work?  Let’s say an automotive plant closes down, and almost everyone is the town loses their jobs.  It’s not just affecting this town.  If it happened in one place, it’s probably happening in others.  This affects our entire economy, especially the trucking industry.  If people don’t have jobs, they don’t have money.  And if they don’t have money, they don’t buy goods.  If they don’t buy any goods, there’s nothing to ship.  It just shows us that every player on the team has to be healthy to win the game.

Another hit on the trucking industry is that a large portion of the goods transported by trucks are auto parts.  If the Big 3 go under, the entire economy is likely to follow.  Because of the number of people they employ and the amount of business they create for other industries, their demise would cause failure across the board.  So hopefully our government can come up with a solution to keep these major economical players in the game.
