Friday, April 8, 2011 by
Today, we bring you part 3 of our interview with USA Truck Driver, John Carpenter, which includes his Top 3 tips for new truck drivers.  John came through the Driver Solutions Training Program back in July of 2010, so he's closing in on 1 year of experience under his belt.  To get caught up on our entire interview series so far with John, check out part 1 here and part 2 here.  Don't forget to check back tomorrow as well for part 4.

Now, on with the tips...

Q: What are your top 3 trucking tips for those drivers just now starting a trucking career?

A: Here are my top 3 trucking tips:
  1. Always do a pre-trip inspection. It’s very important for safety and legal reasons. There are many things that could go wrong with a semi truck (or any vehicle for that matter). It’s critical that you check it out each time before starting your route.

  2. Scale your loads. Make sure you aren’t overweight and if you are – fix it. It doesn’t make sense why you wouldn’t do it.

  3. Even though all of these things we have now on our cell phones help us keep in touch…don’t text and drive. Also, if you are going to talk on the phone - get a headset. There are many accidents each day and most can be avoided by simply paying attention. I don’t know how many people I see that drive by me and they have their head down with their thumb on the phone. It’s not worth it!
