From the Indianapolis Star's List of Top Jobs for 2011, truck driving ranked No. 9 based on the annual job growth with the average salary of a truck driver being over $37,000 per year.

The U.S. Department of Labor also forsees a 9% increase in employement for truck driving up until 2018.  Factors such as retirement of existing truck drivers over the age of 55 years old and the tightening up of road safety rules are developing this higher demand for more qualified truck drivers.
