According to U.S. regulations, all drivers of CMVs are required to maintain a log book.  A log book is a means for recording various details pertaining to the transport assignments truck drivers undertake. The log book is akin to a notebook and sports a framework on each page which lists all the 24 hours of the day in 15 minute portions. Drivers pursuing trucking careers, are expected to make photocopies of the pages of the log book ad retain one copy for themselves to produce during inspection. A second copy has to be given to the employer for his records.

An electronic on-board recorder (EOBR) is similar to a log book and records the same information as that inputted into a paper log book. The EOBR differs from a log book in being automated and requiring only the on and off duty time to be fed in by the driver. It is much more convenient and forgery resistant than a manual log book, which you will learn more about during truck driver training.

As per FMCSA rules, each change in work status has to be accompanied by a corresponding entry in the log book recording the name of the place. The log book is expected to be a record of the daily work done by the driver and should mention the date, distance traveled, truck number, carrier name, bill of lading number and the driver’s initials. A driver who has undergone truck driver training at a semi truck driving school is well versed with making log book entries.
