Why Truck Driving? USA Truck Driver Tells All

Thursday, February 9, 2012 by Derek McClain

Tired of living the same day over and over?

You know what we mean - wake up, get ready for work, drive the same route each day, do the same job (such as operating a  forklift) over and over with seemingly no signs of progress or change.

Steven was in a similar spot before he decided to go after a truck driver job.  In fact, Steven went to another truck driving school prior to finding Driver Solutions.  He soon found out that a school with credit checks and loans was not the best option for him.  Driver Solutions, on the other hand, was able to find a company to sponsor his training (USA Truck) which meant no upfront tuition money and no credit checks.

Not only was the ability to travel the country appealing to Steven, he also wanted to provide a better living for his family.  With a wife and 2 kids there were some upcoming expenses (such as dance school) he was going to have to take on and the first year potential salary that comes along with a truck driver job was encouraging.

We were able to catch up with Steven while he was waiting on this USA Truck Driver Trainer to pick him up.  Watch the video above for more from Steven!

Dreams Can Come True

Saturday, October 29, 2011 by Truck Driver Appreciation
Driving trucks is something I always wanted to do. When I was a kid, I used to help my dad out on the farm an be at awe over the big trucks. Its was from then on I have always been fasinated by them.

When I was 12 yrs old, my dad passed away from a job accident and I was devistated. After I had gotten married I was laid off from a furniture retailer after being with that company for ten years. My wonderful wife told me 'You always talk about it, do it baby'. So I made the call to Drivers Solutions an went to trucking school in indianapolis, IN. A year has passed an I still enjoy every bit of my career, I'm with USA Truck and I'm about to enter there Driver Trainer program. Dreams do come true and if my dad was here, he would be so proud of my accomplishment.

Monday, October 3, 2011 by Derek McClain
Are you trying to find companies that are offering truck driver jobs with no experience required?

Even if you've found a company with entry level trucking jobs available, you may be wondering how you go about getting started if you have no previous experience behind the wheel of a big rig...

Surely you have to go through some type of training before they let you take the wheel of a semi tractor trailer, right?

Let's break everything down into 3 super simple steps to explaining how the Driver Solutions company paid CDL training program can help you get a trucking career started:3 step process
  1. Complete Secure Online Driver Application - You are going to need truck driver training so you can get a CDL license to qualify for a job as a professional driver.  By completing the online application, Driver Solutions can work to find a trucking school in your area.  In addition to this, we will answer any questions you have about the trucking industry.

  2. Consider Company Paid CDL Training - One of the biggest hurdles in starting a career in trucking is the cost associated with training.  It's for this reason that Driver Solutions offers the company paid CDL training option.  This means that a trucking company such as PAM Transport or USA Truck will sponsor your training and cover the upfront tuition costs.

  3. Successfully Complete CDL Training & Start Your Career - We will work to qualify your application for a trucking job opportunity and schedule you to attend trucking school - that's right - we do the work for you as long as your application meets the requirements of the training progam.  Upon obtaining your CDL license at the end of training, you'll have the opportunity to start a new trucking career with a company you've agreed to work with for a period of 1 year.

Texting & Driving Video - Won't Start Texting

Saturday, July 16, 2011 by Derek McClain

Today, we have a guest blog post from Marsh Carroll.  Driver Solutions intitially connected with Marsh via a tweet about texting while driving.  Marsh was kind enough to send us a link to his new hit music video - Won't Start Texting.

We checked out the video and decided we had to share this on our blog.  Marsh was able to connect with us via the Driver Solutions Facebook page to make this is a possibility.

Texting while driving is a serious issue that's definitely been a hot topic lately.  While not something to joke around about, Marsh does a great job of putting together a "fun" approach to a very serious topic.  Enjoy!

Below is the guest blog post from Marsh about his new texting while driving video (featured above).

Won’t Start Texting – A New Music Video About Distracted Driving.

Howdy!  My name is Marsh Carroll and I am a high school science teacher in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. I am also the safety officer so I train my co-workers annually about the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS).  This past year, to spice up the training, I composed a folk song called “The WHMIS Warble”. It became a YouTube sensation. A USA Today reporter saw it and asked me to make an American version – The OSHA “HAZCOM Song” was born. The HAZCOM Song became a huge YouTube hit. (As the trucking industry knows, HAZCOM is an important component in the transportation of dangerous goods.)

ZoomSafer
, a company dedicated to reducing the level of distracted driving,  enjoyed that song so much that it asked me to make a music video about the dangers of distracted driving, specifically texting while driving . “Won’t Start Texting” was the result.

Won’t Start Texting tells the story of a trucker who has to transport 400 chickens and a pig from East to West.  There are distractions along the way but he makes sure to live by the chorus:

“Won’t Start Texting / Resisting That Temptation / Eyes on the Road / To My Destination”

I hope you enjoy the video and remember, texting and driving do not mix in any country.
Thank you.

Part 1 - Interview With John Henries - USA Truck Driver

Friday, April 22, 2011 by Derek McClain
John Henries came through the Driver Solutions training program in August of 2010.  He’s kept in contact with us via our Facebook page and we recently had the opportunity to do a phone interview so we could catch up.  Over the next 4 days, we will be posting this interview series, so be sure to check back.

Now, let's get started with part 1...john-henries-usa-truck-driver

Q: Why did you decide to become a truck driver?

A: I am 45 from West Virginia.   I was working in Telemarketing and the hours were really going down.  It got to the point to where I was wondering if I was even going to have a job.  At that point for me, it was either work in the coal mines, on a river boat or truck driving.  I’ve always wanted to do it (drive trucks) and a lot of people in my family have worked in the trucking industry.  I wanted to take advantage of the timing, so I went to Driver Solutions.

Q: Why Driver Solutions?

A: My cousin went through the Driver Solutions program about 10 or so years ago and drove for PAM Transport.  He told me about it and recommended it to me.   I got on the Internet to check it out and decided to apply.

Q: How do you like it at USA Truck?

A: I love it at USA Truck.  I wouldn’t go with any other company right now.  I am getting the miles, I am getting the loads, and I am staying busy.  They are treating me good and getting me home when I request it.

Q: How long are you out on the road at a time?

A:
I am out about 3 weeks at a time.  I then get about 3-4 days at home.  The longest I have been out is 56 days.  This was a favor for my fleet manager.  He asked me first if I would stay out longer, so I agreed to help out.  Overall, USA Truck is great about getting drivers home and they will do everything in their power if it’s any type of emergency.

Q: How many miles are you getting a week?

A: I am getting between 2800 to 3100 miles per week.  When I first started, the miles were a little low until I proved myself and then the miles came my way.  I would say it took about 90 days.  If you really put your nose to it and you want to make money then you need to make sure you are eager, on time and prove yourself.  If you do these things you aren’t going to have a problem.

Be sure to check back tomorrow for part 2 of our interview with John!

3 More Reasons To Become A Driver With USA Truck

Thursday, April 21, 2011 by Derek McClain
USA Truck announced its 1st quarter results today and it is evident the company continues to move forward in a positive direction.  Here are some reasons why it's an especially good time to become a driver for USA Truck:USA-truck
  • The economy, in general, is picking back up as is indicated by a 11.7% increase in base revenue compared to the first quarter of last year.  The company was also able to improve operating cash flow, free cash flow and the overall health of the balance sheet.
  • While the economy is showing signs of improvement, there's still a good number of unmanned trucks (around 10%) remaining; meaning there are plenty of job opportunities with USA Truck.
  • Cliff Beckham, President and CEO at USA Truck, continues to say, "We will not lower our hiring standards to man our trucks because the cost of doing so is much higher in the long-term than the short-term costs associated with elevated recruiting expense and reduced tractor utilization."
The first quarter results demonstrate that the company is sticking with its VEVA (Vision for Economic Value Added) strategic plan and that it understands the CSA (Compliance, Safety, Accountability) program requirements for the Department of Transportation.

Beckham closed the article by saying, "We believe freight and capacity dynamics in the marketplace are favorable for additioanl pricing gains in the second quarter, which we expect will benefit all three of our business segments as we press forward with the VEVA strategic plan."

Iapply-trucking-jobt's clear that opportunities are available in the trucking industry with USA Truck and the best way to get started is still through company paid CDL training.  Trucking companies aren't just looking for drivers, they're looking for qualified drivers.  And they're willing to leave some trucks unmanned in order to hire the "right" people.

Driver Solutions Grad Interview Part 4 - Truck Driver Talks Social Media & Electronics

Saturday, April 9, 2011 by Derek McClain
Welcome to part 4 of our interview with USA Truck driver, John Carpenter.  In today's segment, John answers questions about using social media as a truck driver.  He also gives the full run down on the electronics he uses in his truck to make life much easier.

If you are just getting caught up with this interview, you can check out part 1, part 2 and part 3 to find out more about life as a truck driver.

Q: As a truck driver, how do you use social media?

foursquare-logo
A: I stay in touch with my friends using my phone and checking-in on Foursquare.  We check-in at our stops to let each other know where we are going each day.  They all seem to like watching my travel and Foursquare is much easier than saying “here is where I am today.”  You can also add a little blurb to each check-in with a photo now.

I am brand new to Twitter, I’ve probably only been on for a month.  I really like it and I think the first thing that turned me on to it were the celebrities.  You can almost converse with them and you get to see their comments on the daily.

I have always been a Facebook guy and still use it regularly.   And it was MySpace before that.  Not even sure if I remember my MySpace login now though.  That seems like 100 years ago.

Q: You mentioned Foursquare, but do you use Facebook Places at all?

A: I use both Facebook Places and Foursquare, but it depends on where I am at and what I am doing.  Sometimes I use Facebook places to tag people if I am with a group of friends.  But Foursquare most of the time.

Q: What other electronics do you use on the truck?

A: Well, all of my friend have TVs.  One has an Xbox, I have a PS3 and we all have laptops.  Most of us have iPhones or Droids.  I even have a scanner to send in my bills while I am out on the road.  It helps me save time and paper.  All my buddies are jealous of me now because I can scan my bills as I deliver.

Q: What kind of BlueTooth do you use?

A: I have a Blue Parrot that I picked up at a truck stop.  It’s a Bluetooth with noise cancelling that does a decent job.  It comes with 5 different head and ear pieces.  You can hang off to the side of the ear or hook to head piece that goes over head, another option that goes around neck.  I tried them all and went back to old school style of wearing it like a Walkman.

Driver Solutions Graduate Interview with John Carpenter - Part 1

Wednesday, April 6, 2011 by Derek McClain
Today, we bring you part 1 of our 4 part interview with John Carpenter.  John came through the Driver Solutions training program in July of 2010 and has been driivng with USA Truck ever since.

Find out more about why John decided to get into truck driving, what it's like working for USA Truck, and how many miles he's getting each week.

Q: What were you doing before trucking and how did you get into it?

A: Well, I will be 36 this year.  Back when I was 18 or 19, I was working for Coca-Cola and got a taste of driving trucks.  My grandfather drove trucks and I’ve been around trucks a lot of my life because other family members worked jobs where it always seemed like trucks were around.  I always found trucks to be very interesting, but at the time you had to be 25 to drive a truck for Coca-Cola and I didn’t want to wait.  So, I went into restaurants and bars business doing some management.  Later in life, I decided it was time to look back into the truck driving.  I ran across Driver Solutions & C1 Training.  They had a trucking school campus near me and it seemed to make sense.  I filled out the application and talked with a recruiter.  Everything worked out for me and I got started with USA Truck.

Q: Why truck driving?

A: I am a business savvy guy.  From a business standpoint, the trucking industry is almost recession proof.  There is always going to be a need for trucks and deliveries to be made.
From a personal standpoint, I love the travel, freedom, and flexibility that come with a trucking career.  I have the sense of being my own boss and for the most part, I am.  Now I do have a fleet manager, but on the day-to-day there is a lot of freedom.

Q: What is it like working for USA Truck?

A: USA Truck is a very supportive company.  I have a fleet manager that I talk with on a daily basis and he assigns me loads by working through the freight coordinator.  Right now, I am usually out around 5 weeks at a time and then I get 5 days off.  It’s almost like a mini vacation after putting in several weeks of hard work.

As far as miles, I am getting about 3500 miles per week and for the most part other drivers I talk with are getting right around 2200 or so miles on average.  Last week was my go-home week and I was still able to get 2100 miles working Tues-Thurs.  I take my breaks, don’t abuse my time, and stick to my schedule.

There are some times when things don’t work out as planned.  Just last week, I wasn’t able to make it home when I was originally scheduled.  That’s to be expected in this industry, but the important thing was my fleet manager put forth the effort and I could tell he really tried to get me back home – it just didn’t work out that way.  It still meant a lot that he took the time to try to work things out.

Overall though, I have a blast with my fleet manager and he keeps me moving.

Be sure to check back tomorrow for part 2 of our interview with John to learn more about his training experience and how he balances life on the road with family time.

Truck Driver Training - Knowing When To Ask For Help

Sunday, March 20, 2011 by Truck Driver Tips

The Driver Solutions Training Program is an accelerated course designed to teach inexperienced truck drivers the basic skills needed to obtain their CDL and start a career behind the wheel.  Part of that process is learning skills out on the driving range with a CDL instructor. We caught up with a USA Truck driver while he was waiting on his trainer to pick him up and had the chance to ask him about this process.

Like any new skill, there are going to be times when things don't always come easily to you.  It's during these times that it's important to remember that you have an instructor with you for a reason.  Steve brings up a great point in this video - take a minute to sit there and calm down, then ask your instructor for help.  The instructors have a lot of experience and are always willing to help.
